Wasn't the X a secret symbol like the fish so that early Christians wouldn't end up fed to lions? Personally I think that a perfectly good pagan mid-winter festival was pinched by the early church. I mean, holly wreaths, mistletoe, feasting, carols, fire ceremonies - these are all pre-christian. Lets put the debauchery back into Yule!! Like the idea of a themed display - I may pinch it.

Happy Yule and drive those evil spirits out so that the sun comes back in Spring!!
