Although mould release is not required with silicone moulds, I would always recommend using a wax or silicone based mould release, as it can greatly extend the life of the mould. It doesn’t just help with removing the cast from the the mould it actually helps to protect the mould from being degraded from the harsh resins that are cast in them. We are finding that a wax based mould release such as Macwax works a lot better on silicone moulds than a silicone based mould release, but unfortunately the wax based are at least double the price of the silicone mould releases.
With hdpe and other plastic moulds/containers that are thin enough to be flexed or can be dismantled generally no mould release is required but with solid moulds that can’t be flexed or dismantled a mould release is essential otherwise you may not be able to remove the cast. The silicone based mould release is perfectly adequate for this.
Neither the wax or silicone releases effect the resin as they are specifically designed to be used with resin, but they both leave a fine coating on the cast blanks which will get turned away on pen blanks anyway.
Hope this info helps
