I'm working through some large inlay blank orders, which means I have a lot of time while the mill is running. One of the the things I got to was something I'd been meaning to do for a while. My daughter is four and just starting to take an interest in writing (and loves drawing) so I wanted to make her a robust writing instrument. I decided on the workshop/sketch pencil because if it can survive a workshop environment it should cope better with a four-year-old (time will tell if I got that right).

Not paying too much attention, I grabbed a rippled ash blank that Doug sent me recently. Sorry Doug, but it didn't look like much as a blank. But in the finished pen - WOW WOW WOW!!!

So if you have any more of those blanks lying around Doug, you know where to send them!:kiss:

I can see a bit of the ripple, is there more on the other side, regardless, a nice instrument, just have to teach her not to write/draw on wallpaper.

Astonishing inlay David, I just can't figure out how it's done!
If you are gagging for Rippled Ash Ive just got hold of some cracking boards of it - clean white colour with a superb tight, strong ripple, best I've ever come across - which I will be cutting into pen blanks. If you are interested (or anyone else for that matter) just drop me a PM.

I'd love to, Dave, but I'm a bit financially embarrassed at the minute. Will bear you in mind when I re-stock.

Lovely pen David, very impressive work

It`s me who needs to say sorry as I realised the other day when turning a Euro pen from it that infact it`s rippled Maple :goesred:.
As you quite rightly say as a blank on the surface the wood doesn't look anything, but that`s more because the board I cut if from has been knocking around the workshop for a couple of years since I was given it & isn`t exactly pristine :whistling:
