i have never seen them listed at different heights. It is a shame because I need to trim an inch from mine because it doesnt go low enough when over the bed.

Do you mean the stem length?
The height is wherever you put the bloody thing, don't go chopping it down if it too high over the bed then move it away from the bed.
The whole idea of the banjo is to find an optimum position, swivel it init?

Ah sorry I have just seen you're Welsh, chop an inch off, and buy another so you can swap over the bed.

Welcome Keith I have for ever it seems made my own tool rests then you can craft them to suit the lathe in question, for pen turning 1/2 a pen at a time a wide rest restricts access. Simply made from a round and a flat or two rounds only involves one welded joint so even made by firms ie the welding bit still cheaper than the commercial ones I have found a plate on an angle of 45 degrees perfect for my turning.

Welcome to the forum from over here.

yes, stem length. At its lowest point, where I would want to use it the bottom of the stem hits the bed. Swivelling the bango doesnt work. If I move it away from the bed i cant get it parallel and close to the workpiece.

Use a shorter tool rest on the stem or extend the tailstock so it does swivel away from the bed.
Chopping an inch off the length shouldn't have to be the answer and could lead to other issues.
I have two of the modular type one Sorby and another unknown make, just measured them and both approx 4 ½" to within a gnats cock of each other.
Not that I know where they came from cos I wouldn't buy a lump rod, I have made many tool rests some purpose made for a one off jobs and lots just turned a log into a rest init?

Actually after saying other issues could be caused, I tried to think of some and am stumped.
I had never thought about stem length before other than it only needs to be center height maximum of whatever the lathe bed drop is.

I can't think of a time when I needed, wanted or enjoyed working above center on a revolving object so a few measurements should have you sorted init?
If you have a drop of 6 inches from center to bed and a clamp height of 2 inches on the banjo then a 4½ inch stem would be adequate for all your needs surely.
Of course you could get real testicle and take into account the angle of dangle on the pointy bit and thickness of blunt bit and height from bed of spinny bit etc.
Are you my dad?
Are you my carer?
Have I taken my medication?
What was the question?
Do I live here?

Heres a couple I made out of S/Steel two 5/8" 16mm for my first lathe, when I sold thaT AND BOUGHT MY vICKY I made an adaptor to fit the 30mm banjo. The line about an inch down is my mark for the height I like it. Must replace that bolt one day.
