Round Nose Scraper (Crown) grind angle

Gents and Ladies,

I'm after a bit of advice. I have bought a crown 19mm round nose scraper, and I have checked the grind angle on it and it comes in at 75 degrees. As I have a Sorby ProEdge, and it doesn't have a 75 degree setting, can anyone recommend a good angle to regrind the Scrape to? The 2 closest settings on the pro edge are 60 and 80 degees.

I grind all my scrapers to 60 degrees Adie. I find they give a much sweeter cut that way. I was put onto it by an article in Woodturning Magazine a few years ago. Good luck on your Crown tool though - there's an awful lot of meat to regrind there. DAMHIKT.

The basic grind for scrapers used to be about 80° but things have moved on in recent years. 80° is still a good starting point though. A 60° angle may seem sharper but won’t be as durable so you may end up sharpening more often. There are lots of good videos on YouTube about scrapers if you want to have a look. Negative rake scrapers are particularly popular although one well known turner on YouTube got the angles completely wrong and ended up with an included angle greater than 90°!
