A neighbour has just cut down a dead rowan tree, he is cutting me off some parts that are about 10in long and about 8in Dia. There is also a root ball as well.
What would be the best way to get suitable sections for turning.

Tell him very bad luck in Scotland to harm, never mind chop down a rowan tree, mountain ash. Traditionally planted near homesteads to ward off evil spirits.
The root will make a fine turning, branch, or trunk wood should be sealed at the ends. I used candle wax heated in an old electric chip pan. when I used to make walking sticks and crooks. To season a year per inch of thickness. Micro wave oven can be used but only, I emphasise, only on defrost! Never found a micro wave oven big enough for my stick shanks though. Hard close grained lovely wood.

The tree was dead so he decided to replace it. He also dropped off the root ball, it's about 18in at it's widest so i'm guessing i will lose 6in of that at least. I have to ask my son to split it for me as i don't have a chain saw.
The tree stem i haven't got yet though thanks for the advice about sealing the end grain, i will do that.
I have just cut up a 4in square fence post that has been in my shed for about 18 month and the moisture content is 12% which is not that bad.
I will store the rowan there for a while once it's cut, i will also post pictures of the cuts.
