This time I polished the tube and used a much better decal. The water slide has worked well but there is a small amount of something wrong at the bottom. The Royal Navy one still is proving a problem though.

Thank you Vic. I have no intention of producing anything for sale except for finished pens but if and when I've cracked it I will send you one in recognition for what your son has done for the country.

Heat from the resin lifting the decal??
Try a heatsink in the tube init?

Thanks Brian but its not near to the decal which I would have expected, this is near the end of the tube. I think the diver one might be because its a different type of water slide. I will attempt another with different water slide today.

On closer inspection it might be heat from when I'm sanding it so I'll watch that as see if it makes a difference.

You really are getting into the casting Paul & when you've cracked the issues you'll produce some stunners.

I can see what you mean, but it's leaps and bounds on the design stage.

Though I did like the 1st one as it looked a little more "Authentic " if you know what I mean.

They look great Paul. When are you going to post a tut? I know you're striving for perfection but I for one would find it very interesting. You could recruit Woody + camera:whistling:
Keep it up, great thread:thumbs:

I'll do a tutorial when I've cracked it Bob otherwise it'll be a series of failures and I'd already be on the second series :funny:

I've just been up and turned two more and now think that:

1: the diver is a different water slip decal and is causing the problems.
2. the problem at the ends is with using the end mill. I'm going to give it a damned good sharpening before the next lot.

Here are the latest two. You can see on the diver bit where its right, the tube is clear and just the diver should be standing out. I've done one with 3/4 of it right but still can't get it perfect so I think its time to change the water slide

Paul,

What I do with casting decals to avoid them separating from the tube ends:
1. After trimming the ends of the decal that extends over the tube ends I apply some thin CA around the tube ends.
2. After casting I use my Disc Sander to square the ends, I never use a Pen Mill.
Works great for me.

Thanks Les, I was going to try sanding them next but never thought of the ca, thanks

Do you put the ca on before or after casting?
