Tom Tom though not familiar with their current models. I bought my XXL a few years ago and I like the voices you can get, I have Billy Connolly on mine. I'm sure others will tell you that other makes are the best but it's Tom TOm for me. I'd recommend going to Halfords or PC World and having a look, most of them do the same thing unless you spend that bit more to get live traffic updates and things. There are also special ones if you tow a caravan that can make sure you are routed away from low bridges and things.
I wouldn't recommend using Google maps nav, I used it once when I was towing the van and it sent me down a road marked unsuitable for motors! It sees what it thinks is a road and tries to send you down it. Definately not to be relied on.
Have to say I got garmin and used when was doing courier delivery work over xmas and was never let down. Also lifetime maps.. beats paying tom tom for updates
The latest Garmin has improved vastly on what it used to be, I have the old one with that stupid horrible electronic voice.
The best to listen to and most reliable I have found is the copilot live professional which I have on my phone tablet and now phablet.
But that is in no way basic.
I have a TomTom XL1 It was supposed to speak the names of the roads, it doesn't, you traffic updates you pay for them. If you have a problem with it when it's a few years old TomTom don't won't to know, they may help you if you buy maps or something else. I wouldn't recommend TomTom although that may upset some princesses here
I've had garmin and tom tom and while they both do a good job, the most intuitive was Garmin. It easy to use and you don't have to have a degree in sat navs to turn up the volumne. I also like the shape of the smaller garmin ones as you can put them in your pocket for walking and cycling... as if I do either!
I lent it to someone travelling from London to Liverpool once. After an hour he called me because it kept taking him to parks.... it was set for cycling.... duh!
I bought a Navman a few years ago and am very happy with it.
No travelling along a 3 lane highway on the left hand side lane during rushhour and as we cross an intersection the wife says your suppose to turn right there.
My new car has one built in to it, you can talk to it.
Thanks everyone. It looks like the Garmin is winning. Can anyone give me a model number etc which they can recommend, there seems to be loads of different models.
Glen
Hi glen, I went for the garmin 50 or 80. About £80 or so, more than enough. Thing is, there just a tool, and they have their own opinions on the "best route" often as not I've stretched the route out myself and just use as a guide. Because it's mathematical, it will send you via say the m25 on a Friday, to save 5 minutes, when in reality you'd be stuffed. So often I flip to the map mode, without a route.
Phone maps just as good, until you loose the signal, and the map blanks out.
