Hi Guys,

Have any of you chaps ever turned a sea buckthorn blank. Been reading about how this shrub is the source of herbal drink remedies and other health products, and wondered if it was worth buying a few sticks for pens?

Bob.

I have three decent sizes straight logs but they are just lying under the bench drying. I am tempted to turn one green.

Never heard of sea buckthorn do you have a picture of it.

If you are going to turn it green try and do it in one go if possible or do as Woody did and cover it with a plastic bag overnight. It is great fun turning green wood as you get some very nice long shaving coming off of the wood.

I've made a pen from some that Ed sent me a while back. The number is because I used to put it on the pictures for reference but don't do that any more, just number the picture.

Thanks for the link, Woody - this looks a bit like holly, sort of plain-ish, so maybe not an attractive blank after all - although looking at the guy's catapult via the ebay link that is very nice!

The catapult and what I've got and what is for sale are very different for sure as what he has for sale is straight logs which won't have the same markings, but for £4 if you want something different its not too bad.

Perhaps that is the difference between twigs, branched and trunk like most trees and bushed

Sea buckthorn - nice timber. More of a large shrub than a tree so logs are always small. It consists of a wide white sapwood (perhaps the holly-like colour referred to ) and a core of heartwood which initially is pale green but later darkens to a tan colour that is a great contrast to the sapwood. Occasional pips in the grain as well. It's really only well-grown trunks (5" or so in diameter) that have any appreciable quantity of heartwood. Firm, dense, it is strictly speaking ring-porous like ash but as the pores are small it comes across as rather fine textured. Definitely an oddball and worth getting to know.

No problem Bob. I'm sure I have a couple of blanks of Sea Buckthorn knocking about, drop me a PM with your address and I'll bung 'em in the mail to you.

Hi, matey. You are a kind and generous gent and I humbly thank you for your offer. However, a friend of mine has recently shown me a couple of scans of some mushrooms he made from this wood, and they are as plain and featureless as a sheet of white melamine. So, rather than put you to the trouble of posting them, and me adding them to the collection of other nondescript pen blanks I own I shall (gracefully) refuse your kind gesture. Thank you indeed, kind sir!

Bob.
