Hi, Guys,
Last year I picked up a (free) shipping pallet. Got it home, saw how brilliant the wood was - and sawed it into pen blanks! I posted samples on the site to establish what the timber is and the general agreement was - merante. This comes in reds, browns, walnut, etc. and my pallet has all these hues plus beiges and paler colours. Since then I've made a few pens from the wood, and the grains have all looked pretty good. Here's another - a Timberbits gold Sedona rollerball.

The wood is hard and is good to lathe. It also takes a decent polish. The grain on this blank has a glow like satin, and is reminiscent of lacewood. Grits to 600, three coats friction polish.

Regards,

Bob.

PS. Please excuse crap photos!

Thanks, guys! Yep, I can see a lot of you blokes sneaking into lorry parks and nicking all those pallets - including the loaded ones, no doubt, LOL!

'Ere, Woody, you wanna study what you're posting next time - fancy calling your mate an old pallet, you cretin!!!

Great use for scrap wood, however I don't want to teach any grannies to suck eggs, but be aware this sort of wood is often treated with some pretty nasty chemicals to cope with the rigours of shipping etc. not trying to be a party pooper, just saying:winking:

Go on, Woody, you know they will do you some good, matey! Actually I think that both the roller and fountain version finish up good. I tend to use them only when I've got some interesting blanks that will do them justice.

Bob.
