I've been asked to make a segmented pen using oak and walnut.
It will be the first time I've made a segmented pen and wondered how I stop the dust from the walnut discolouring the oak.
Do I just apply a coat of sanding sealer before sanding?

Is oak and walnut a good combination to use for a segmented pen or should I look at using 2 other contrasting timbers?

Thanks

Matt

Seal with sanding sealer before sanding. Do this for each grit & clean well before sealing. Try a test run with the timbers to see if one is too soft for the other. A soft timber will sand quicker than a hard one & can give an uneven finish. Oak being hard you need to match it with your contrasting timber.

Matt, try to get the finish you require using the skew, i have learned through trial and error no matter how little you use sandpaper you will always get the darker wood interfering with the lighter ..

Jim had a good trick to avoid contamination, but I can't remember what it was and can't find the thread. Hopefully he will see this and remind me of his method.
