Hi, thanks for the great welcome. I don't have "permission" to edit my profile.
I'm retired from the 'heavy construction business'and spend my time between Brooklyn NY and Lancaster Co. PA USA
I have a wood lathe, Clausing metal lathe, cutting/burning torch and welder and all the usual wood working tools and machines. Pretty much self taugt in furniture making, stained glass, pen making.
I 'TRY' to sell on etsy but it's pretty slow. (Handmade Pens and More by Penright by penright on Etsy)
Ther is a corn field behind my house in PA and I pick up the cobs that the animals leave behind.
You have to break them in half to find ones with the smallest core center.
This insures that you will have 'kernels' at the finished size. Probably find one in ten.
I drill for the tube size and soak with CA and redrill. I glue my tubes in with 5 min. epoxy and never had a problem.
After turning off all the soft stuff, soak with med. ca and begin to sand with 150 paper.
This forms a slurry which fills voids and strengthens the cob. You might need to do this twice.
I also soak with thin ca while reaching the finished dia.
Sand normally. I also use Micro Mesh and finish with friction polish.
Thanks,
angelo
