I was wondering what the panel think of this?

I`ve been doing a bit of messing around with segmenting again, I quite liked this combination though I wasn't happy with it as a finished item, hence it not being attached to a kit.

Making this yesterday got me thinking, has anyone got any links they would share to images or ideas on different types of segmenting on pens they might have seen whilst browsing the internet ?

Whilst I'm keen to come up with my own ideas, seeing other folks work often helps with inspiration in other directions.

It looks smart enough, what was it that you didn't like?

A nice exercise in segmenting there, Doug. Why not do a similar design in your local soccer club colours? They should take off, thus making you a millionaire by Xmas:face:
Good luck with your future attempts!
Bob.

Have you looked at the segmenting group on IAP?

That's lovely Doug and could be finished with a variety of kits. I think I would go for black but gold would be nice too.

Looks really good Doug.

It will depend on what kit you put it on as that will be critical in my view.

If you log on to IAP and check out the segmenting area you will get a lot of ideas there..

Happy hunting..

I like that, Doug, although I understand your hesitation as it is quite busy. Peters suggestion of the IAP segmenting sub-forum is a good one, and perhaps you could also try the Penmakers Guild. I try to use only two timbers in any one pen, perhaps adding a tiny veneer of metal too. That way it never gets psychedelic ... More is not necessarily better!

It looks good to me Doug, but i like to segment with no plan involved .. Just go into the shed see what is laying about and cut it up and glue it back up .. But i do know where you are coming from regarding inspiration ...

Theirs no doubt in the craftsmanship Doug but not sure about the design it may look better made up with a pen kit just to make it complete and hopefully more pleasing to the eye but still a very good attempt

Doug Whilst I appreciate the work that goes into segmenting it always seems to me to be a little over the top
I feel that simple insertions always look the part ie. celtic cross or just other woods inserted at different angles.
This is my opinion and I would not wish to take anything away from the skill and time that goes into turners who practice the art of segmentation.
Full marks for your work and the finish looks to be excellent but I am afraid it is not for me.

My instant reaction was that it looks a little busy, but having had a think it may well look better made up. The pen works will break it up a bit is my logic (such as I have)

Looks like a good finish on it and the segmenting looks to be spot on.

Thanks for the replies & the links I`ve been having a good search around, boy do some folks make some hideous segmented pens :funny:

The blank was glued up & finished with CA, the timbers were Purple heart, Hornbeam & Cherry.

The segmenting wasn't spot on enough & even though I liked the colour combination I`ve turned it off the tubes so I can use them another day, it`s all good experience :monkon:

Doug, when people at work ask me to bring in a few pens to look at before they buy, you would be surprised how many go straight for the segmented pens .. It may not be to the liking of many turners but i can vouch how quickly they sell ... Before turning it back you should have given it to a few people to look at who are interested in buying your pens, or if you intend to give a few away as freebies use these pens as testers for your own piece of mind what customers actually think of segmented pens ... :winking: The good thing about what we do is that we all have our own likes and dislikes of shapes, materials and colours, but our finished articles write, so we at least all have something in common ...

I am a big fan of segmenting on pens. I think it gives the pen some character and makes it stand out from the mundane. It was my idea to have that segmenting forum over at the IAP site. I have since left there but when I was there I tried to get more and more people interested in segmenting for pens. There are soooooooooooo many possibilities to do with pen blanks. I have in my shop about 6 to 8 different blanks in various stages to make. All have some sort of segmenting. I have a ton more ideas that I do want to try as soon as I can find some hard to come by shop time.

I think this segmented blank that you have shown is a great example of what can be done. I think it would look great on a kit.
