Separating clip from finial- how to on a Sedona?

Hi guys :)

I’m making a pen, a Sedona, as a Christmas gift for a Dr friend, and want to replace the standard clip with a medical one. I can’t for the life of me work out how to separate the original clip from the finial (I think that bit is called) on a Sedona. It looks like the finial is in three parts, the rounded end cap, the clip, and the plastic bit that inserts into the tube.Im assuming clip and rounded end are separate as clip can apparently be changed.

I know they must be able to be separated as the replacement clip is specifically for the Sedona (or Baron).

I have one of the assembly/disassembly devices, rods, but can’t see how I might use this.

Really don’t want to destroy the kit by forcing it incorrectly.

Any thoughts/ideas?

On that kit you will find one of two ways that the finial is fitted.

1. The rounded finial can be threaded on. (Usually the better quality kits have them threaded.)

2. Pressed interference fit.

If you have a look inside, from the tube end you will seee a small diameter pin.

I think that looks like a Berea Sedona [MENTION=165]silver[/MENTION]. The gold bit has a tenon that is press-fitted into the black bit. In theory you will be able to knock the gold part out Simon, to expose the clip that is recessed inside the black part. Your problem though, is going to be supporting the black part while you knock out the gold part. If you're careful, you might be able to hold it with mole grips of something similar, but you're going to have to be both cautious and inventive to succeed I think. Good luck.

Thanks for that [MENTION=165]silver[/MENTION] but no small pin on this one and doesn’t turn with the limited force I can use trying to hold the dome part from moving. I think [MENTION=735]Phil Dart[/MENTION] is right, thanks, and it’s press fitted. However, still having no luck punching it out. Not done bashing it yet and will report back if I have news, in case others have this issue.

I have learned though that the black part is actually metal. I had thought it was a hard plastic.

Ok, finally got there. Yes, it was indeed pressed in, thanks [MENTION=735]Phil Dart[/MENTION]. I don't think it's designed to be taken apart as I had to use an excessive amount of force to part the pieces. I ended p having to grip the black part so tightly in the grips that it scoured the metal really badly. Luckily that can't be seen and a little work with the Dremel cleaned that up so it then fitted nicely back into the tube. With hindsight I could have possibly reduced the gouges with a piece of cloth or rubber over the teeth of the grips.

However, the replacement clip was completely the wrong size when compared to the original. The original clip came out between the black and the gold dome, with there being a small notch on the top of the black metal the clip came through (you didn't then see the ring for the clip as this was inside. With the new clip I had to put it between the black metal and the wood (see photo). I don't mind that look at all but it has left the small notch in the black metal there, which is far from perfect. I ended up lining that up so it's behind the top of the clip and it doesn't show unless you know exactly you're trying to look for.

I certainly wouldn't want to be changing the clip on these on a regular basis, but it worked in this instance as I did really want the medical clip for my Dr friend.

I’m very new to turning and am greatly enjoying learning this new skill. I still have a lot to learn but am already enjoying what I’m making. Expensive as I’m trying all the kits but not producing anything to sell .... but guess wha.t entire family will be getting for Christmas
