Sharpening scrapers with just a stone?

Hi guys, since my bench grinder is being used elsewhere for the time being,i've been having a lot of success sharpening my scrapers (and skews) with my japanese water stones that I use for hunting knifes, about 4-5 strokes over the top of the tool with the stone and the cutting edge is razor sharp again without touching the original bevel,I also sharpen skews using the same method, rather like a chisel except flipping it over and doing the other bevel too.

I just wondered if anyone else does the same thing?

If anyone is interested in doing this (it's super quick, don't need a power source just a stone and oil/water) you can get a set of 3 diamond plates from ebay for less than a tenner!

Guess I'm not the only one then Grumps

Forgot about the parting tool,I sharpen those the same way.

I have 2 types of hones/plates/stones, the little ones that I place on top of the blade and move the stone or the larger tabletop type stones to run the tool across.

My suggestion is to look carefully at a magnified image of your chisels after using the stone or the diamond then make up your mind how clever the edge you put on is or how rounded you made it. A quick look with a strong light along the edge will also tell all. It will do your water stones a disfavour as well if you want them flat again some surgery to the surface will become apparent. Have success anyway you choose but there is no such thing as a free lunch just saying Matt.

I just use a plain simple old oil stone, fine one side course the other, done it this way for years and shown many people how to do it and they still go and get an expensive jig for their grinder.
Carbon tips the same way init?

I have been checking the edge on a couple of tools that I have sharpened and they all seem fine but i've used this method for months now and really, when it comes down to it...if it cuts effectively,it works :winking:

Been using a homemade jig for the grinder for the finger nail and bowl gouges but anything with a flat edge goes on the stone or diamond plate.

I am amazed how the diamond stone I purchased recently has brought my CT skew and parting tool back from the dead.

I have diamond plate for skews and scrapers and a pocket sized oil stone for my parting tools.

This is the diamond plate I have been using in 1k grit, ignore the bad review (Guy probably was using the plate dry, always add water or light oil)

This is the stone
Faithfull Combination Oilstone Aluminium Oxide 100 x 25 x 12.5mm - Oilstones - Sharpening - Hand Tools | Axminster.co.uk

Remember to keep them clean and covered when not in use (don't wipe them with tissue or keep them out while turning, dust will block up the pores)

Being Neanderthal, I am unable to get a good edge on anything by hand and sight only which is why I've got a pro-edge and I get a good edge every time. I leave the stones and things like that to the skillful

I some times use a disk on the lathe with a fine metal cutting disk if I'm in a rush or have a lot of chisels to sharpen including my carpentry chisels and plane irons

Well...I can't sharpen knives at all,I invested a lot in dear equipment and can't put a decent edge on anything.

Chisels are totally different, just lay the tool flat to the stone, push forward, lift up,place it back, push forward and repeat as necessary, probably takes more skill to setup a grinder and jigs.
