I tried and tried to make a shavings pen with titebond but gave up and reverted to superglue. I just covered the tube in glue and rolled it in the shavings from the floor... from a variety of pen turnings

That's nicely done, are you pleased with the effect? Have you got a close up of it?

GREAT WORK, PAUL:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:!
Brilliant piece of innovation here - what a terrific idea!:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
Go to the top of the class for an original piece of thinking. From now on I'm gonna hoard my shavings!

Take a guess
It`s certainly different & very unusual, looks well made & finished

I imagine it won't work with PVA as that is water based so will cause the savings to swell initially & then move about as it dries, whereas no such problems with CA from the looks of it

Me, again, Paul,

Am I right in thinking that all you needed to do was sand the blank after coating it with shavings?

Bob.

Thanks Peter, Hopefully this is a bit closer. I am pleased with the effect. There are bits of brass and copper in it too which makes it sparkle. A friend saw it and instantly chose it out of all my pens but put it back down again when I told him what it was. :bwink:

Thanks Doug, that's exactly what happened when I tried with titebond.

That's right Bob, I turned it as it was quite uneven, sanded it, filled in the holes with more shavings and then polished it.

There is a lot of fumes from the glue when doing this so please be careful. I've become allergic to superglue fumes now and a slight wiff and I can't breath for a day or two so please wear a respirator or organic mask at least.

Next time I'm going to chuck in some brass dust to give it a bit more of a sparkle

Umm, there is a lot of stuff on my floor Jim. I'm not the tidiest of people and haven't cleaned the floor now for a month or so. There is: Walnut, brass, copper, bubinga, beech, oak, ash, mahogany, teak, ebony. I wasn't fussy about what I picked up, just a handful of whatever. I put it on a plastic bag and then started the process. I covered the tube and rolled it. It is a bit difficult to start with as the glue doesn't stick straight away. I put some thin superglue on to penetrate and then got a handful of shavings and held it around the tube. I kept doing this and filling in holes until I was satisfied it was oversized and ready to turn.

After turning there were a few holes which I filled again with thick superglue and then soaked with thin.

Finally I sanded it and polished it.

I want to make one from a single wood because I think the finish will be the same as a burr.... we'll see.

The close up shows it well and it is even better than it appeared in the first photo, it's probably down to you have all sorts in there, rather than just one species.

That might just be the case Peter but I want to try a single wood just to see anyway.

Who knows, I was surprised with how this one turned out, so may be equally surprised with a single wood, can't wait to see it.
