For many years I've used my skew chisel as a shear scraper but whilst sorting through some of my very old turning tools I came across a couple of big old scrapers I'd not used for years, so decided to reshape one as a shear scraper, this is the old tool shown side by side with my 1" skew.

I marked up the shape I wanted & cut the waste away with a 1mm slitting blade in the grinder, as this is carbon steel I kept quenching the blade in water as I went along.

Then it was on to the proedge for final shaping.

I tried it on the walnut platter I made this afternoon but need to grind a shallower angle on the top as I wasn't completely happy with how it performed.

how do you sharpen a negative rake scraper- do you touch up both bevels, and does it matter which one you do first. I am using a proedge too if it makes any difference.

I grind the bottom angle as I want the burr facing up hill, if that makes sense. As long as you can feel a burr as you run your finger over the edge it will cut.

I did 60 degree on the bottom bevel Woody & 45 on the top, think I'd be better around 20 degree

I've been using one like that for a couple of years now.
Bottom grind 45, top grind 25. You just touch up the bottom grind in everyday use.

I just sharpen the bottom bevel.
It's a good save Doug. The tool is too good to be gathering dust.
