I can't believe its taken me so long to make one of these. I used to get by using any old chunk of wood I laid hands on. Now I am official. My wonderful wife teases me about all the wood I have laying about, and she is right. That's what happens when you are friends with an arborist. I have a side by side refrigerator/freezer in the shop. I keep beverages in the frig and "special" wood in the freezer. I had saved this piece for lidded boxes but made this today. Its a root flair from a hard Maple. It has a couple coats of boiled linseed oil as a finish.

Nice shape Woody, It'll get well used, I have 4 of them including a very small beech mallet I weighted with a lead core.

Nicely shaped Terry, you just gotta love that timber, and straight out of the freezer also ..

I seemed to have missed this one Terry. A great looking mallet and I am sure you will get plenty of use out of it, mind you it would be such a shame to hit anything with such a lovely grained tool like this.

A nice piece - I just think it's a pity you didn't make pen blanks out of that lovely wood, Sob! Sob! Sob!
