Bit of a dumb question i know as this is generally a pen turning forum, but i know there are a lot of you guys that turn other items. My question is, do you sign your item on the bottom of a bowl for instance, before you put the finish on or after and what do you use to sign the item ? :thinks:

Generally before the final finish some use special inks some a form of branding iron, some engrave some use woodburning tips.

Same as Woody - A Peter Childs pyrography iron. Before or after? - Depends on the finish but it's much more convenient to do it after because then you haven't got to go back to the lathe. French polish, definitely before or it will singe at the edges and look terrible. Oils and waxes are generally OK after. My technique differs from Woody's though, I get my wife to do it.:bwink: Indelible pen can wear off and can easily be removed if someone wants to rip you off. Ask Phil Irons - he's been a victim of that. Pyrography is much more permanent and looks more professional too IMHO

So far I've just used a clear plastic printed label from Abel Label. I've only turned 3 items that were good enough to be given as presents, but then I don't get time to turn much in the way of bowls etc at present. However, when I do start turning more bowls I have thought about signing things as we have a Peter Childs pyro machine and like Phil I'd get my wife to do it for me

Is there a way to personalise pens? My friends have a fishing business and have asked me if I can put the name of their lake on the pens so that they can give them as gifts to their customers. I declined as I have no idea how to do it.
