sketch pencil woes

Hi
i have been turning for a couple of months so i am very new,i have turned a sketch pencil with great success until pressing all parts together, all went well until pressing the mechanism to the collet, all hell broke loose and the mechanism tube split.
i ordered a second kit as i cant find anywhere that sells spares, and pressed all together for a second time and did it again.
Is it me or are these just cheap kits and i could get a better one or spares ?
i now have one half finished pencil and two part kits
any advice would be much appreciated

I've had pretty good luck with sketch pencils so far..
but on the odd occasion I've needed spare tubes pen-kits.co.uk have been pretty good for spare parts

Post us some pics and where you have purchased the kits from, that way if anyone else has had any issues with hem then it may be the kit or the way its being put together.

Guessing came commenced coincidence two new members from Cheshire today, welcome from over here mate.Do you use a form of true measurement before you advance and destroy. So far just believing is not going so well. Good calipers can be your best friend.

Hi Mart

I've looked closely at my own pencil used in the workshop and the one kit I have left unmade for this and I'm stuggling to see what the problem is.

Unless you've been extremely unlucky to have bought a couple of faulty kits my guess is that it's your pressing technique at fault. How are you doing this?
If the clutch mechanism isn't lined up square with the tube it has every chance to split and/or buckle otherwise its very straightforward.

Might be as simple as that.
