Have you made any, and were they any good? How was/is the mechanism?

Had a request for a pencil, so ordered a few kits off ebay today.

The only experience I have of pencils was a european which I got from turners retreat, but the mechanism failed after a couple of weeks.

I use Schmidt mechanisms since Woody gave me some ages ago and I found they are quite robust and I don't get too many coming back because they can't work out how to fit the leads, which is more than I can say for the slimline ones.

Sadly most other pencil mechanisms just rhyme with Schmidt.

I've made and sold a few but don't like them but keep a few because they do sell now and again. I currently use the streamline ones but like the Schmidt ones that Walter has shown.

I had forgotten about those ones Walter and I have to agree with you on them and they will replace in a standard Parker refill converting a pen into a pencil I have some that must be ten years old and work perfectly

They also come with either 3mm or 5mm leads which are less prone to snapping than the 2mm ones in the slimlines.

The slimlines I`ve just got have 0.7mm leads the same as one I`ve used for years for sketching. A 5mm lead would be BIG.

You are right of course Ray, I meant 0.3mm and 0.5mm. :goesred:

Th only pencil kits I know of with very thick leads are the Artists Sketch Pencils which have a 5.6mm lead.
