I was given a furniture panel which looks exactly like that, it smells a bit as well.
Cheap rosewood furniture freely available these days. Neil farrar identified it but I can't remember what he said:goesred:

I've found the post and it was Lignaterrae who suggested as below and this was seconded by Neil.

Never easy from photos but it does look like Sheeshan Rosewood (aka Sissoo Rosewood), Dalbergia sissoo, from India. Seen a lot these days in (fairly) cheap but poorish quality of furniture imported from India. The wide pale sapwood is very characteristic.

Nothing pale in the samples shown how does it cut is it easy to polish is it heavy or light how long is a piece of string? There are so many unknowns hovering. Perhaps the newly drilled is for? Did it cut cleanly was there a build up in the flutes? Lots of questions?
Trust it does the job mate look forward to the finished product.

Peter.

Three timbers to add to the list of Cinnamon smellers Imbuia, Sassafras, Honduras Roewood all known timbers that cut with this smell. Good luck mate.
