Hi all....a comission for a pen....can it be snappy.....well here you go Alligator jaw bone and resin....i did two (both ends of the blank) i chose to turn the better end second so i had a little practise.....turned very well with carbide tools but it stunk so bad drilling...
When my wife had Chemo and Radiotherapy for double Cancer the maker of Alligator Jaw Blanks picked up on this and sent me two blanks ,one for each of us.I showed one on this site and on the IAP where it was the feature pen on the front page. I never experienced any smell.
I used to work in the leather trade and we used bones for "turning" edges over. They had to be ground to shape, and as you say, the smell is awful! Great tools to use though!
They turned Ok it was when drilling.....they smelt like the waiting room of a bad dentist.....your lucky Peter if you didn't smell that!!
I prefered turning the Moose cr@p!!
