Some Help With Identifying Wood Please.

Morning All,

I just had to nip home from work to pick up some stuff I forgot when leaving the house at 5am only to meet the postie who gave me a box that had no return address and no details on the outside, other than a note from royal mail saying it was damaged before it arrived in the UK.

Inside I found these



No note in the box no identification on the blanks a general mystery! I think the large blanks are maple and walnut, But the smaller ones are a mystery to me. The red one I believe is redheart as it doesn't look like the bloodwood I turned recently.
The other two however are an absolute mystery to me they contain purples reds light and dark browns and almost black grain. Any Suggestions are greatly received!!

That's the next part of the Mystery I've not ordered any woods from overseas other than some bois de rose but that was only ordered this week and I haven't received an order confirmation on that yet

Those two with the purples and black graining look a bit like cocobolo. I’ve had some with similar grain before but not those colours. Cocobolo comes in many different guises

Bang on for cocobolo. The red blank doesn't appear to be edheart but it could be a number of species. Are you able to get a close-up pic?

I vote against cocobolo in favour of Kingwood. The last one on the right could be a lot of things indeed, including paduk.

I'm amazed that it took 8 posts before someone claimed them not at all surprised it was Mark though :wink:
Tell him he has to collect in person from down under and produce an order and proof of payment.

A carpenter mate of mine suggested Camatillo for the purple wood

I would go with Cocobolo for the purple stuff, apart from anything else I've never known Dave to be wrong!
The red one could be so many things but would be easier to identify with a good clean shot of the endgrain.
My first thought was Padauk so here is a link that shows how different pieces can look.

In a case of furious back-pedalling the pictures now make me think the red blank it is indeed redheart: fine texture, cloudy dark markings. When you turn it, it should have quite a strong and unusual smell, slightly acrid. All lovely woods just to fall unannounced through the letterbox!

Just an update on this.
The box was sent from my uncle in Up-state New York the woods are Maple, Curly Maple, Walnut, Redheart and Camatillo.
