Hickory.
Looks very plain here, but the darker grain will darken further, on exposure.

And finally.......

Had to give it a go!
Pine cone.

Not perfect, still a few small voids, but worked out a system now, if I can be bothered to make any more:funny:

Thanks all.
The LP was made from offcuts, I can't believe how well they matched up!

The cone.
I was invited to a garden tour on Saturday, at a private house. (own private woodland included in 8 Acres!)
These cones were everywhere, so had a word and brought some home.
These are more spongy than wood like, and actually got a better cut by whacking the speed up, and cutting with a bowl gouge with the bevel rubbing, than I did with the skew.
Voids were filled with leak fix.

It's a 2 part filler Peter, used for repairing holes in car radiators etc.
It cures in 10 minutes and can be sanded or tooled back.
It looks a dull grey, until a finish is applied, then looks black.
You can buy it from most Motosave type shops.

Lovely trio there Neil, I too like the pine con which has made me jealous as I failed miserably with my attempt.
