I have been thinking about making one for the wood lathe, but now I don't need to. It's a shame they don't do them without the collets as I have the full set, I suppose I could put them on eBay.

it is a good price. I paid more for my Beall one without collets. The Beall is very nice, and nothing much else was available which took ER32 collets in the UK.

buying without the few collets in wouldnt save many pounds- certainly not enough to be a deal breaker. i got a full set of 19, shipped from china for £30, so they must be about a pound a piece plus shipping.

I know everyone is going on about screw on collect chucks, but unless you don't have an MT 2 or above I believe they are a waste of time..:whistling:

The mt2 collect chucks are in my opinion a better option with less parts and easier to change the collets over.

But then I'm a traditionalist that keeps it simple stupid..

But then it's only opinion.:rolling:

Hi Eamonn

I've been looking at these for a while trying to decide if I have a use for it. Can you expand a bit on how the MT ones are easier to change collets on? This Chronos model looks as if it's just a collet nut on the end similar to a router set up.
Would help me make a decision as I've no experience with them at all. I do have a little threaded collet chuck that came with my Cowells metal lathe but never used it. :goesred:

There are Chinese collets and Chinese collets, Chronos ones have a better run out than some cheap Chinese one, I know this as a fact as I bought a set of Chonos ER32 collets and a friend bought the generic Chinese ones and he has sold them on and bought the Chronos ones, they are both made in China, but they are markedly different. eBay prices ER32 collets at about £4.00 each so that's where mine will go.

MT2 collet chucks are a waste of time, if you want to hold material that will fit through the bore of the headstock. I can hold a metre or more of stock and just feed it through as it is turned and cut to size, much less wastage.

Fair comment, I don't tend to use them for turning anything longer than the collet generally. But can see the benefits of what you say.

I drilled one of my MT through so it will take anything up to 8.2mm.

Lately I tend to only use the MT collet on the pen mandrel and metal lathe for holding milling flutes.

Thanks for pointing it out tho. Cheers.

Hi Eamonn

Sorry Bob, only just seen this.

In my experience with the one that Woody links too is that when you try to undo the collect bolt the chuck comes undone as there was no hexagon or c spanner facility to hold the chuck. They may have modified them since the early one I saw.

The one Dereck links to will be the same however not seeing it or using it I can't speak for that unit.

In my experience once a MT is knocked in its seating it holds and it's a simple single spanner job to remove the chuck. However if the mt is not in then you will need two spanners which all good collect chucks have.

Peter (buckeye) has fair comment on his post, but as I only use mine for small jobs and end milling then I don't see that problem.

In reality that is my experience and my opinion but have always found the MT collet chucks easier.

Maybe as I have mainly used them on a metal lathe and limited use on a wood lathe. I may not be using them to the ful potential tho.:rolling:

Ah I see what you mean Eamonn. I've just looked at the one on my metal lathe, it's very small and a threaded one but as I said I've never used it so no experience. I can see some instances where a collet chuck could be useful for me on the wood lathe just a question whether it's worth spending the £50 or so which might end up in a drawer along with all the other "useful" buys:winking:

I've had another look at the Chronos chuck and it has 2 locking bars which presumably addresses the problem you highlight. I like that it goes to a 3/4" collet and comes with a 1" x 8 as well as M33 so will fit both my lathes but also see the attraction of just knocking in a MT

Much appreciate you input, now got some thinking to do:think: It's only the cost of a couple of pen sales after all. I find that a great way of justifying my purchases to the powers that be :whistling:

I use mine for turning finials and also any small items that I need to turn rather than change the jaws on my main chuck

Just as an update to this Chronos chuck, I decided I could find a use for one but when I looked closely I could see only 1 insert though in the description they listed M33 plus 1" x 8 and also said supplied with a 3.4 x 16 adapter so I sent them an email and they were very quick to respond saying it was an error - so no 3/4 insert and they have ammended the description immediately.

Quick action from a good supplier  and mine's on order as it will fit both my lathes.

What a bummer, I obviously left it too late, just had an email from them.

"Thank you for the recent order, unfortunately the SCT Collet Set System (51059250) is out of stock with no shipping date. Please can we cancel your order and email you when they are back in stock? Apologies for the inconvenience caused. Please let me know how to proceed."

Had a confirmation email that it was cancelled.

"Thank you for the reply we have cancelled and refunded your order and I will email you when they are back in stock. Apologies again for the inconvenience caused."

Then a few hours later I had another email.

"The following order has been shipped to your delivery address:"

I hope they have refunded me.
