I've done a couple of pens with celtic bands now which have come out ok, but one thing if it's doable (due to my location) would be great would be instead of a celtic band but to embed the Manx logo - the triskellion/3 legs of man.

Obviously not in that detail, but to get the basic shape exposed when turning, even if it's just on one side of the pen.
Trying to figure out whether this is actually doable, and if it is, what bits I'd need to add in & where to do so/what angles etc.

Think I've probably got my work cut out trying to an elaborate shape like that but you never know......

Cheers guys

You would be better asking if any of the guys who have a CNC if they could do this for you ..

Thanks gents. I've got CNC (sort of - i.e. a manual minimill I converted, but haven't learned the software!), but I think I'd need to add a tilt axis on mine to do that to cope with the shape of the pen.
I can't get it to do tiny detail in wood with any sort of neat results though, so I'm not sure what the secret to that is. Maybe it's the cutting tools I've tried not being right for the job. Fine on larger stuff but trying to write letters about 8mm high it just ends up with a shredded mess really.

Nah, I just thought that it would be interesting to see if I can figure out exactly what cuts & inserts I would have to make in order to get this to come out when turned.

The foot and thigh could be cut into the blank, problem being the lengthwise cuts for the calf sections.
Agree cnc would be way to go, mine blew up last week and I don't repaired it yet so can't experiment for you sorry.

Jim nothing to flatten a nice bit of timber and easy mill cut into that or scroll saw anto fret a piece of the proverbial compared to the intricate designs I have seen made by members of our Wood Guild. also cutting it out by hand in veneers lots of ways to exhaust yet. I know the thrill of acheivement bites you severely where theres a will theres a way. Kick it around a lot more find out what will suit you. Main thing have fun. A mate of mine since departed married a girl from your island his wifes sister lives in her house they inherited heard some exciting stories about your beautiful Island.

It's a wonderful place here Peter (apart from the arseholes "running" it, but that's the same anywhere right?). I've lived elsewhere but hate being away from here for more than a day or two. It's a special place to live and I'm very lucky to be able to.

Yeah I'm sure there's plenty of ways to do it all things considered. I'm pondering along the lines of how the celtic bands are done in some shape or form now I've done one or two of those, but obviously it'd be more complex and I'd only have it showing on one side.
I know there are things like CNC etc and decals etc but I'm in a big learning phase which fascinates me to learn about how certain things are done, and in particular if there's a bit of effort and difficulty in a process then it kind of makes it appeal a bit more, just to see if I'm capable of it I suppose.
