I scrounged an old golf shaft from the pro last week to see if of any use and this is the result fitted to a vertex kit in gunmetal.
Not at all sure I like it and may well recover the components but it's unusual in as much as, apart from the obvious join, there are patterns and colour shades in the carbon fibre I wasn't expecting. Not really visible in the photos.

Very easy to work but I found it impossible to get a gloss finish so ended up satin. I guess the only way is to lacquer it - any ideas?:nooidea:

CA would give a gloss finish.

Looks a good job to me, nice smooth click on these kits, one of the few click kits I have any time for.

I used to dabble in carbon and there is a polish you can get which will give it a super shine but it was quite expensive although I think any fine polish would do but it does need to get hot.

I like that, and a good service to offer them golfing types when theyy upgrade their clubs or " break one ". You should sell some to the local clubs etc.

I wouldn't bother looking to make this shine Bob, the blank goes really well with the gunmetal as it is .. :bwink:

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys.

It's easy to turn Jim but what I did notice is that there are irregularities in the carbon and the odd tiny air pocket as well. Might be that it was a cheapo Dunlop shaft and better quality might be different. Some interesting patterns though which aren't picked up by the camera so looks better in the flesh.

There must be hundreds available as club shafts are often broken or changed and as far as I know just scrapped. If not of use for pen bodies it would make centre bands and bushings etc. so a potentially useful material perhaps

My first idea was to try an old fly fishing rod but I must have thrown it out as I can't find it, (very unlike me to throw anything away) but I've since googled and the idea certainly isn't new.

Paul. Can you remember the make of polish? I can't find anything on the net. Tried everything including 2 stage acrylic polish and whilst get a decent sheen I can't get a high gloss so will try CA and lacquer as well. Don't know if I want gloss, just curious.

Wax it and stick it on a buffing wheel, anything but the finest abrasive will scratch it and any scratch is a weak spot.
Which is possibly why it broke in the first place, or two hands and a knee in a poor golfers case.
You can also use the club head as a pen stand or trophy for the idiot who thinks it's clever to break clubs.
That used to be a logo on one of my old websites for a golf society, club skipper never did live it down and the trophy is still played for as a memorial to him now.
So yes it's not new.

Thanks Paul, I'll have a go with the CA as it's unlikely to harm the carbon fibre. I'll try on a scrap bit anyway.

It wasn't a broken club Brian, just one the pro had replaced for whatever reason so no club head.

I used micromesh down to 12000 and then tried acrylic polish, scratch remover, brasso, chrome polish with the best result being a satin sheen finish but will try a buffing wheel with fine soap and see what happens.

Problem is, I easily get sidetracked which deprives me of turning time.

me too I understand that one only too well init?
I have a drawer full of broken club heads I have found around the course, Maybe I exaggerate about 4 or 5 if anyone wants to make a golf club pen stand.
PM me your address and I'll add you to the list of things I have to catch up with this week.
