Cross cut spalted blanks are the best. Yours has some very nice figure. Did you stabilize them first?

That is a beautiful pen Peter,
i did similar once, my workshop was a little damp causing the spalted x cut hackberry to split in the first week.
I turned it too thin to the tube also,
Hope you get better luck than me
and that is a stunning looking pen..

No Terry all of these blanks are ages old, the blank has a hairy light weight, not stabilised feature, never turned it before. By the time I finish all fourteen different timbers I will know more. You have the advantage the tree being a US grown species.

I gave the blanks a good work over, will keep an eye on them we are in the hot then very hot time of the year now it seemed stable. Using the open weave sanding papers there was no carry over as well, man there are so many features in that timber. When you buy a number of blanks sight unseen you never know until you turn them down just how they will go, sure are time takers.
