After some advice on here on squaring off blanks without using a barrel cutter, I bit the bullet and bought a cheap disc sander. Wow, what a difference. All my non standard blanks squared off in minutes, with nothing more than a V block, transfer punch and a scrap bit of acrylic.

The acrylic keeps the V block square.

Cheers

Any approach to Disk Sanding that keeps the blank square at the ends is great. Love my wset of punches as well. Glad you found a way.

Very expensive compared with a squared timber piece with a piece of mandrel inset, and yes I use sleeves on that for other sizes of brasses. Scrap metal sleeves take 15 mins to make , are everlasting.

Spent some time viewing both this the barrel end trimming and the finishing of the Leopard Spot recent blank Ed. Thanks. Patience and light cuts, careful sanding great results.

We have a black and a grey cat the black cat in the block of videos in the LH corner has similar markings to ours.

All of the methods we use can be simplified at low cost. I knew a guy (now passed) in fact I showed articles of him who was professionally a maker of pens who made them look so easy from start to finish who with a deft small pass on the ends while turning made them dead square with a skew. His output was in the so many thousands.
