Still sampling the stabilising of certain blank, this one is Masur Birch after it was given a double dye process of Black then Red .. Personally Masur Birch makes nice pens without any messing about with them, but i do like to have a mess about .. :winking:

how do you double dye? is it dye the black, and and then hit it with the red, as I have done with curly maple?

That is correct, black first for a short period under vacuum, the red for much longer ..Trying to get an happy medium, less black but enough to be effective and more red ..

That's right Mark, but i have just done a couple this week using powder paint and Meths, Green and Black, i turned the blanks round first to remove unwanted wood .. Then soaked the wood in the mix until it had fully soaked into the wood .. Left to dry the did the same with the Black, but for an hour or so .. Cutting and drilling the blank to tube up i could see that it had soaked through the wood. So it can be done without Vacuum ... Hopefully i will post up the results next week ..
