Stabilising kit?

Hullo,

I've got some burr blanks I would really like to stabilise but I don't have much spare space in the man cave and don't want to remortgage the house. Are there any reasonably priced starter kits out there? I'm not really sure where to look for them. It seems that cactus juice is the favoured goo for this kind of thing?

Turners Retreat has a few kits in Craig, along with some stabilising Resin .. But it ain't cheap ..

Better be great prospective blanks to offset the cost but then we tend to forget easily with equipment lathes etc.

at first I tried to make a transparent chamber from acrylic but that reacted with the resin and fell apart (it has to be PVC!!) A local welder then made my chamber for £20, it works great but its a bit tricky having to look down into it.

the pumps can be expensive- you can use a vacum generator which uses a compressor or some modify fridge pumps but I already had a oil free vacum pump so use that.

resin yet its a bit dear for me
but use it for degasing.

Big field great rewards in acheivement some timbers are virtually unuseable without treatment me I tend to buy the ones that need the special infusion always regret the powdery, hard turning it generates almost like wearing it down, the results can be spectacular. Initially in the United States it was like it is for us now specialist firms were formed where you could send your blanks for treatment. Because its something most people do not do each day heaps of chemicals have to be dumped as happens to me with glues. Really happy for your progress wish you success.

A the others say really. I don't think you'll get away without spending money and it does take up a fair amount of space. The resin is going to cost around £100 and you need to make sure you have enough wood to use it.

Yes the turners retreat ones are a fearsome price, a bit like all their stuff!

I saw your YouTube video George with your pressure chamber and I reckon the fabricators at work (who are due me a few favours) could rattle one up in no time, so that part is easy to fix.

I have a compressor but I don't think it can sook, think it only blows, but i wonder if it can be modified to sook? Hmm, might ask the engineers at work tomorrow.

I don't want to get into stabilising or casting in a big way as I have neither time nor space but if it's something I can cobble together cheaply I'll give it a go.

that's what the vacum generator does Craig, its called Venturi effect... I am unsure how it works but you don't modify the compressor
