We do have some wood suppliers on here look through the sell section you should find them in there.
Failing that someone 2 x Neil may be able to guide you in the right direction.
Also Ed's mate signed n this week he was a crook maker and may know what to do for you.
Sorry I can't help but welcome to the forums, come in pull up chair and participate in the banter init?

Not aware that box elder is available in anything other than pen blanks over here, talk to ed brown at exotic blanks in the US, he may have some lumber or at least point you in the right direction

many thanks for your quick frendly replies
I will post some photos of my hiking poles when i work my way round here
I also make hand carved puppets punch and judy mainly it just got me into carving.
I have carved quite a few different speices of birds for hiking pole toppers along with some garygoles and was hoping to use the natural colours of woods for some projects i a have in mind .
Paints do enhance certtain features of toppers, as the lime wood which i mainly use for carving is a bit bland looking .have tried cherry and have a bit of apple seasoning ,but have seen some flame wood box elder ,hence the reason for the question
unfortunatly i dont have a lathe but oftern have the need for one ,space is a bit short in the workshop .

Hi cobalt, nice to see a stickmaker on here. I have used box elder in the past for a stick top and it works and finished nicely as all maples seem to. It was a bit bright for the types of sticks I was making though and I only used it once. That was probably about 15 years ago now! I also used to work in ramshorn.

I have done very little stickmaking over the past 10 years now as I lost over 500 seasoned stick blanks to woodworm (long story about a messy divorce and sticks being moved and stored in a wooden garage for 2 years before I could get them back...:vangry:). To add insult to injury, I lost all my picture files of made sticks when the PC was ruined by a lightning strike a few years back. I sort of gave up then.....:monkon:

The last ones I made were carved as one-piece sticks from hazel shanks still attached to large sections of thick branch. These were crooks and leg cleeks and were gifts for farmer friends. When I was carving seperate heads, most of my blanks came from john boddy timber at Boroughbridge in N. Yorks.
I would spend hours and hours scouring the offcut bins there and came away with some superb pieces that were just big enough for a stick top but no use to the bowl turners..........

It may be worth trying them for some box elder.

Cheers

Tom

Slim chance of you still having that PC or the hard drive from it but if you have I may well be able to help you there.

Stick tops look good. I am not really a stick maker but I do a little carving and I am half way through carving a Gargoyle head for a walking stick
