I have only ever done one full Ebony pen, long time ago now but if i recall it did have a good shine to it .. What i have come to learn through experience is i lose some sheen if i do a CA finish when it is cold in the shed, which then obviously the CA is cold which must change the properties ..

Ebony can can be polished to a glass like finish without anything other than finer grits.
Put a sealant on after if you wish.

There are so many ways you could try micromesh then finish with autosol or T-cut then finish with mirorglaze or some other car detailer last year I sanded the CA to 400 Abranet and did the final polish with Brasso and finished the pen with Carnauba wax. Autosol and T-cut are fine grit polishes I have seen some posts here where folk use Farecla polish.

The way i do it is, Firstly apply the CA with Baking paper the glue will hold on the paper unlike tissue which is absorbent,
and you will get good thick coats put six to eight coats on, then go through grits 240-1200 finally
a polish on the buffing wheel with Autosol.
Using this method you will get a shine like glass hope this helps.

Regards Steve.

I use the small bags that come with most pen kits to hold the centre bands etc to put the CA on with. These work better than paper.

I have made pens recently with black and white ebony and with Brazilian brown ebony. Both had a CA finish and I had no problem polishing either to a mirror-like finish.

Bob,

Brown ebony is not a true ebony and a member of the caesalpinia family, true ebony is the diospyros family, the two bear little resemblence in respect to structure other than their weight, hence the name of brown ebony.
