Hi, Guys,

Following on from the recent topic on razors... I bought some razor handles from Vinnie recently and thought, as it's a mild day, I'd do a bit in the workshop. Used an off-cut from one of Mervyn's "el Diablo" blanks to make the handle. Grits to 600 then fine wire-wool, all wet-sanded. I couldn't decide what finish to use: as I reckon that neither friction polish or CA will last long immersed in hot water, I decided not to bother. Maybe I'm wrong here?
An interesting point is this - for obvious reason you cannot display these razors with the blades fitted (unless there is an A&E department nearby!) so I removed the blades from a Mach 3 fitting (£2.00 out of pocket right away!), which will allow any potential customers to see the finished product.

Regards to all,

Bob.

That looks great, but isn't the blank acrylic? If it is you don't need a finish on it.

Thanks, Peter,

Yes, it's acrylic, but when finishing a pen in the same stuff I've always found that you get a far better shine than leaving it untreated. Plus, finishing with several layers of CA adds a little protection against scratches, etc..

Regards,

Bob.

I finish my acrylic with wet and dry to 2000 Bob. I made a razor recently and have been wondering what to do when displaying it for the same reasons you mention so might just do the same although the CMM said about sticking sellotape over the blades but it wouldn't stop anyone who was set on hurting their selves. At one time you could buy individual blades with covers on which could be sellotaped but I can't find them anywhere.

I never put CA on acrylic unless it has voids or wood in it, I alway end with a silver polish to give it an real high gloss.

H, Paul,
I bought a pack of four Mach 3 blades that cost me 8 quid. My intention was to give one away with each handle I sold. However, in the 3 Xmas fairs I did people were picking up the handles and asking me what they were. I could understand this as the handles looked like polished pieces of acrylic with a blob of metal at one end. It was then I realised that I'd need to fit a blade attachment on one of them to indicate what they were. Hence my dismantling the blades from a holder. With this in place there is no more mystery, and the customer can handle them safely. Obviously, I'll remove the dummy holder and give out a complete blade assembly with each one sold.

I had the same thing Bob and decided a blade was needed but couldn't find out the best way of presenting it which I think you might just have found. The one I turned I decided to use myself to check it out. I used it on Christmas Eve for the first time and then on Christmas Day my wife gave me a new very expensive designer one. I've now passed mine on to my Dad.

Paul,

Suggestion - asked Dad to retain the blade when he's finished with it. When he gives it back use a fine pair of long-nose pliers and gently twist the blades out of the holder.

Good idea Bob, the one I've got from the CMM is also a mach3 so I could do it with that if it doesn't go white like the other blades I've used have.

My Mach3 came with something that looks like this I don't think is it but may give the idea.
Basically I mean a dummy blade for display purposes I know I still have it cos I have many times attempted to use it by mitsake, I am not in a position to find it at the moment but will look it out when I get home.

Bob wire wool is not the answer on acrylic, just go through the mm grits it will shine like a shilling up a £*@@&^s arse init?

CA is supposed to be acrylic when cured so I can't see it being any harder than the acrylic itself so won't afford any more protection.

Another possibility maybe?

I've seen Mach 3 disposables which come with single blade covers (can't remember where at the minute), and I don't remember them being especially expensive and I'm sure there are cheap almost identical copies around.
I haven't done any shows but what I did with my "sample" razor was cut a piece of celluloid from a toy display box and sellotaped it to the base of the blade. Done carefully it's hardly seen and makes it safe to handle. I suppose if you sacrifice 1 blade it could be stuck with d/s foam tape or similar.

Does the job well mate the diversion is the blade however one in a sealed plastic housing could provide a safe display IMHO.
