I always take photos of all the steps of making all my pens. I actually took 53 pics of this one. I like to be able to refer back to the various steps. That and I just like taking photos. I've always used either a commercial barrel trimmer or a piloted end mill for trimming the blanks. The captive ring was left over from the trimming process.
