Well disaster struck straight away, :noway1: I drilled 3 of the blanks & a split develop in the one as I drilled

Fortunately the other two drilled like a breeze so with tubes glued in it was onto the lathe, I didn’t find the dust too bad though I was wearing a mask but it’s certainly not the nicest smelling stuff I’ve turned

Though as the photo shows there was plenty of detritus, I’ll put the finished pen in the appropriate forum but as I can’t remember the last time I turned a pen I can honestly say I really enjoyed it.

Look very nice blanks Doug. I have only turned wood. is polyester hard to turn
Thanks, it turn’s quite easily & sand’s nicely just be sure to use sharp tools.

So what's the difference between acrylic and polyester blanks????
I found it more dusty to turn than acrylic, you don’t get the long ribbons that wrap around everything with polyester & the ribbons you get are very fragile plus it smells more other than that I finished it the same way & it shines up lovely

What did you sand to? And what finish did you use. I got the 30th May for my review of my left eye and hopefully will be given the ok for my right eye. But then have to wait 8 weeks for the review after the operation.... buying kits and blanks but getting frustrated waiting as I can't cut or drill anything....

Polyester is not my favourite to turn. I find it brittle & prone to scoring no matter how sharp the tool or how light the cut.

@Tom.1946 & @howsitwork? after turning I just went through the grits finishing off with micro mesh sheets which I use wet, if memory serves the finest is 12000 grit & gives a great shine, I’ve heard folks use car polish to finish off but I just used toothpaste.
Hope every thing goes well with your eyes Tom

Doug,
Glad you got a nice finish, someone told me they use Brasso...thanks regarding the eyes one down but review is 30th May. Hopefully will get a date for my other eye and don't have any more illnesses to put it back further.....
