During the First world war at Squires Gate (now Blackpool airport) was a massive army training camp, then during the second world war same thing, only the RAF arrived too. They must have all used the beaches for firing practice as they are now littered with both live and spent ammunition. Contrary  to popular belief the salt water preserves them perfectly and brass cases that have lain there for up to one hundred years come out as shiny as the day that they were discarded. ......Note to myself...must get the detector out and get down to Squires Gate while these storms are coming through..
