Hi All,
As some of you may know Alex Mutch at the Ullapool Centre retired last year.
On a recent visit to that area I discovered the business had been bought by a young Yorkshire lad.
His name is Andrew Walters (Andy) and he is refurbishing the old schoolhouse at Cullicudden on the Black Isle.
He has opened a business 'Black Isle Woodturning' and trades from the schoolhouse.
Andy is also the UK dealer for Vicmarc lathes and carries some stock for them.
He can be found at
Black Isle Woodturning | Woodturning Supplies | Timber | Tuition for wood turners
Tel 078 4218 9743
his email info@blackislewoodturning.com

I miss Alex and Rosie, and I owe a lot to Alex for the enthusiasm and encouragement he showed me over the years. I've not had occasion to use Andy since he took over from them, but I'm sure if he retains their core values he will be successful.

I can vouch for his choice of Vicmark I believe the VL150 I have is the best built lathe size for size and always preferred fitting my choice Variable speed and motor running the belt out the bench top rather that the extra height and high cost of the extras.

@Vic, I was on a few days break to Strathpeffer which is about 130miles from Glenrothes. I drive up the A9 to inverness and turn left, can't miss it.
@Jim, I visited the premises and it is very much a WIP. The schoolhouse is being refurbished as a Home and the canteen is being used as a home until the schoolhouse is ready.
Upstairs in the schoolhouse was being fitted with carpets when I visited and downstairs was the ( temporary ) shop that had a good selection of tools etc. There were Vicmarc spares and I was offered the Vicmarc pen jaws, ( they also fit the Record 4000 chuck ). As I said, very much a work in progress. The shop/showroom will be in the canteen with the lathe he uses for demonstrations and tuition.
@Alan, He has already had the first demo. of 2015 and is hoping to make it a monthly event. He also has started giving tuition.
Thanks Peter, I have no experience of the Vicmarc but it seems to have a very good reputation

I called at Ullapool on a couple of occasions, both times picking up some good off cuts at very reasonable prices. Great service

Don, i will be looking at buying a Vicmarc sometime this year and i certainly wouldn't mind a ride up to Scotland if he was to have a few in stock .. I appreciate now that he has WIP, i hadn't realised that the business had changed hands as i followed the old website link.

Well when you do Jim, you'd be very welcome to pop in. In Highland terms, the Black Isle is just up the road from me.

Jim,
I did tell him about this site, adding that I was sure someone mentioned the Vicmarc.
I said it would be worth joining and contributing his ideas. I also mentioned Phil and Dan to him as suppliers and left it up to him.
Both him and his wife are very busy with the refurbishment but it is coming along nicely. I am sure if he was forewarned you would be very welcome up there.
Indeed if you fancy a Vicmarc that would be the place to get it. I am sure Andy would give you the best of service.
One thing he did say was that Alex Mutch had the dealership for Vicmarc as well but didn't advertise that much ?
