A hand-painted, by my loving and talented wife😘, fountain pen, on a large Executive kit. The wood I used for turning was beech. My only contribution was to turn and finish it. If turning it was easy, the painting took around 2 weeks to be done, numberless (well, probably around 20) layers of different paint, different paint types, extremely care for their compatibility and how they look one on top of other (due to their transparency and translucent), a real pain in..... Finally, the client was extremely happy and that's all that matters.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
I really hope the client appreciated the work that has gone into that.

As above, nothing wrong with a Beech pen, but that really does elevate that to another level.... Well done to you both!! 😍😍

Thanks Mark! This is why I use ordinary, but fine, wood for such works. I wouldn't let her paint a cocobolo or zebrano pen:noman:

Fantastic, Sorin ( and wife )
Do you have to over turn to allow for 20 layers of paint?

Alan
Thanks Alan! This "sandwich" of layers is not extremely thick, most of the layers are extremely thin (a 10th of mm is probably the thickest and very rare), the brushes, the paint viscosity and painting technique allow to obtain this. So, no, it's not over turned.
But, in other circumstances, on other pens, the paint forms tiny "bumps" (due to the design, or technique, or simply to obtain special texture effect). In such cases, some clients want to leave it as it is, to feel the texture, such "imperfections" give a good sense of real handmade and not perfectly machined object, other clients want an uniform finish, mostly glossy in such cases, and this is the real challenge to fill the gaps with CA and polish it, as we speak about even 0.5 mm gap on some areas. Luckily, when clients feel the "imperfect" texture, most of them stay with it, so I'm saved :) !

About ten years ago my wife Marla worked with a woman to do something similar to what you and your wife do. Marla gave the artist the brass tubes to paint and then cast them in polyester resin. The blanks could be turned just like any cast blank. Your wife is a better artist.

Thanks for your kind appreciation, Carl! The paint was firstly protected by a thin layer of painting lacquer, after this I also applied several layers of CA for an extra protection, the painting lacquer is not suitable for day to day use of a pen or, even worse, for potential scratches or similar.
