Thought I would try something different

Last week's efforts. Took some time to do this as I was finding my way as not done much of these designs.

The lid is Walnut, the cup I am not too sure of but could be Ash and the finial is from a scrap piece of Oak









What I do like about this is that the lid fits properly. Not too tight and not loose. Pleased about that. Might have a go at making another.

Slightly out of focus. I think that's because i was shaking a bit. Must get myself some sort of stand/tripod.

Upside down! no problem at all. Side to side......no chance....

My photography is awful. I may invest in another camera and stand, but not sure if that would help. I am no David Bailey

On a serious note whilst a lid that is snug feels nice to the turner, with different woods they each absorb the moisture from the home differently, so the lid can be snug one day, tight the next day and over loose the following. There is a turner in Bordeaux who turns complex boxes http://georgesbaudot.fr/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0621-1024x841.jpg, once turned he keeps them in his house for a year until they are stable, I do the same.... why? well I learned a lesson once; I made a box for my mother to hold some pearls, it was a snug fit, a year later I had to repair it by re-turning the lid and the box!!

Thanks Pierre, good advice. I always try to use old, dried and well established materials where I can. I have noticed that this one is moving a little already. I take the lid off and replace it frequently so that it doesn't jam. I would be a little "cheesed off" (English expression) if this one were to break. Thanks again for the info.

Nice job Frederick. Like Pierre, I tend to make the lid fit just so that it can be lifted off with one hand as most times that is what is expected. I rough turn box blanks and let them settle I have some that I rough turned over a year ago which still will need to come indoors for final drying out.

I have learnt a lot over the past few days. I would have never thought of acclimatising the wood after turning but can certainly see why now.
This one is now "resting" indoors hoping that it doesn't move too much. Thanks again...

Still the same 'phone. Pierre solved the problem for me. Not tried the ipad yet though. It's all down to the orientation of the 'phone but it if the picture is taken in portrait it comes out sidewards ........... but I am happy that some are displaying the correct way up...
