Showing off with my first Jr Gent, someone said to me "can I have one please? Actually, make that two!" Both in purpleheart. Cannot believe how bad this stuff smells when You're cutting it!!

A nice little order arrived from Timberbits the other day. Using an off cut of walnut (I had to make a stylus with the rest) I was itching to play the morning, so I did:

I haven't done a Sierra before. Unfortunately I didn't quite match the wood to the nib so it's about 0.5mm to big at that end. I was surprised (after assembling the two Jr Gents) just how easy this pen is to assemble.

All three pens are finished with two coats of Cellulose sanding sealer and three coats of HUT Crystal Coat friction polish.

I have finally worked out the friction polish too. I wasn't getting a good shine, but, the formula of less polish, more friction seems to work for me.

Thanks for looking!

PS - photos are from my iPhone on the kitchen work surface...

A lovely trio of pens. I like the Sierra mechanism its so much nicer than the slimline. You have certainly made a good job of them and the purple heart should darken up a bit.

Nice work Mr Finch. Glad you've mastered the friction polish. Just be a bit careful in that too much friction can occasionally burn the finish and you have to start again.

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Just put my first gent next to one of the newly turned ones:

Colour difference is quite a lot more pronounced than the photo shows. Top is the "old" one and was turned about three weeks ago. :)

Hi Colin, well done and we can see you are mastering the finer arts of turning, finishing and presenting.

And the fact that you have become your own worse critic as well.. You (we) can't see the under turned end on the picture so it hides it well.

You can take them apart again and finish a little further if you are not happy with it..

Morning here Colin great foreplay the three new and the previous one I was thinking if you meant purple heart smells wait till the wrong Walnut does turn up reminds me of some shocking stuff evil even. Sure you meant the Walnut thinking about it.

Handy studio the kitchen surface in a rush.

Following your progress like me you have to go through your own Waterloo of sorts to learn how to shape and finish then along comes another medium band it starts again.

Neat pens mate. Dog raised an alarm stray no goods around an hour ago around 2.30 am wish there was less boozing yahoos around. What made it worse a cat sneaked out with me and led me a merry chase for a while in cat years he is older than me (really old) so I was happy he gave in first.

Kind regards Peter.

Colin,

3 cracking pens you have there.
The sierra is my favourite ''cheapest'' pen to turn ( I don't like the slim lines euros etc) & you have made a nice job of that one & the 2 gents.

Thankyou Sir! I will definitely be turning more Sierra pens, had quite a few enquiries already. Don't mind the slimlines, they are quick and easy! :) I don't have the sanding sorted for the Sierra or JG yet, still doing that by hand - something I seriously need to look into!

Morning Peter! It's definitely the purpleheart that stinks, not had a walnut smelling of anything (yet!)

Quite like how the "kitchen studio" turned out and if I ever get enough money together to replace the worktops I might save a small piece to use as a surface in the light tent.

The shape of the Sierra was pure luck. Having not turned one before I just "guessed" on what the shape should be, having seen others previously posted on here. I think the trick is going to be repeating it!

Sounds like you had a rough night, we don't suffer the drunken yobs where I am, just noisy cars and motorbikes. Thankfully I am out tonight so have managed to pass my dogs (two ten year old Westies) to my parents. Also means I can go out Geocaching all day tomorrow without worrying about them. One is diabetic and needs insulin every 12 hours - he also only has one eye having lost one to the diabetes. :(

Well done on all pens Coll, those Purple Hearts blanks look very deep indeed, not surprised that they went pretty quickly ...
