A couple more pens turned yesterday. I was asked to do a couple of UK native woods. The Hazel on the left was done last week, then there's Hawthorn on the right.
The 35,000 year old Swamp Kauri in the middle is most definitely not native!
The Kauri is from wood that was recovered from a New Zealand peat bog. The fallen trunks in the bog are massive - up to 40ft round and 200ft long and the trees were around 2000 years old when the fell and were buried. The wood have been preserved in the bog, but is not yet fossilised, so I've been told that it's just about the oldest workable wood around. It doesn't look like much until you apply the wax. Then the colour and grain just sparkles and glows.
