This whole morning we spent at the Royal Australian Mint. Our host was the son of my very long term mate who same age as our visiting daughter from the US. He has 40 years experience there he joined them at age 15 as a Fitting and Turning Apprentice now a senior exec.

We went through from spending time in the sales area to all the workshops:drool::drool: actually in them speaking to the experts who design expand , die makers, coin machines, coins in 44 gallon drums. Commemorative coins abound.
One huge room where all the Gold Plating and other plating is done, kept thinking Brad would be in metal heaven. One machine used tiny pointed bits they throw out after one long run he gave me a couple stand by Brad I have plans mate. Concave coins , colour inside coins thousands of designs over the years.

Camera sensitive all through but my mate took our daughters hand then mine in one of the 2 dollar coin machines attached.

My heart was singing as I went wonderful family friend and us three.

My Mates Dad is the bloke who self taught on the farm learned Electronics, Metal Work, Steam level Welding owns several Jaguars including an XK120 does all his own mechanical overhauls, scale model steam engines. Made his own petrol motor for a scale model flying plane. He built in the later years a Fair Ground Organ C/W timpany, organ template and slotted music (it lives there as well) he lost his wife a few years ago to Cancer.

I count myself so fortunate to have even met some of my mates they are brilliant. He had the same cancer as me last year stripped his heavy Jag motor and worked through the motor recently, new bearings rings etc in the spare motor for the XK120.

Anyway what a great day. PS the visitors pass V34 my birth year.

Peter.

At 55 the young fella has been at the mint for 40 yrs he loves working there I have never seen a more inviting workshop warm as and so friendly talking with the Techs. You know your getting older at the sales desk I asked about the filigree Australian Coat of Arms the 25 plus girl did not know the word filigree, she referred me to her boss who said ( her age about 50) that its a new world out there are so many names and expressions the younger ones are not familiar with. Never mind they did not have them now.
