I had a brief time in the workshop and, after all the discussion on using ca I thought to hell with it, I have to make a Sierra for an order I'll finish it with ca just to see. I don't have b.l.o. so it was just a straight 6 or 7 coats. I have to say that while the feel of the wood is like plastic the gloss finish fits in well with the gloss finish to the rest of the pen and I know that it will stay that way. The fumes from the ca are a problem though. I may need to get a vapor mask.

Looks very good Ray, I just run my extractor when applying CA it takes the fumes away otherwise the fumes play havoc with my eyes.

Yup, a good looking pen Ray, using the CA finish is definitely worth it when using Red Mallee as your blank .. :bwink:

Ray while that is a nice enuff pen the picture don't show it off as well as it might.
Try cropping a bit closer and losing the wood background.

Thanks for that, at the moment I'm just using my phone for pics but I've ordered a light tent and I'll get my dslr out then and do it properly.

Nothing wrong with the phone pics just do it on a sheet of plain white paper will improve them no end.

As for the blo, if you want to wipe your blank to bring out the grain or clean away the grit, any vegetable oil will do the same job even cooking oil.
Ca will still go over it and set well
