Can anyone recommend a good pen-turning tool-rest with a 25mm post. Which are better round or flat bars or are they all about the same?:thinks:

Me thinks its about what you are used to. Having said that I have a round bar Sorby style on one lathe, and angled flat bars on the other three, each with different profiles. The ones that I hate are those that have a long slope between the upright and the rest as it is very difficult to brace your index finger along the rest as a depth gauge. So regardless of the rest shape, an upright configuration is essential in my book.

i have the sorby ones which I use. I also have the original angle type that came with my late. I cant say that I have a preference between the two.

I have sorby ones & the tapered edge ones & I use whichever fits the bill. I don't find any difference really as I can use both with my finger as a guide on the back of the rest like Neil says.

Easy to make I used to go to Steel Sellers and but shorts and use flat steel cut the stem at 45 degrees, make short and long such a easy task for you or a welder mate be very aware and careful of your stem measurement though a sloppy stem is not your friend nor is a fraction over size an easy trap for the unwary.

My handiest tool rest in the down position at the moment for me the ideal angle of 45 degrees. Home made.

Thanks to all who replied to this thread. Some very useful advice. I ended up purchasing a new 150mm flat plate tool rest with a 50mm post for £4.90. I would prefer not to broadcast how, but if you interested please PM me!!:thinks:

Are you sure you mean 50mm post?
