Many years ago when my woodworking focus was scrolling I stopped by a Woodcraft store for some supplies. Inside there was a turning demo taking place. The man was making tops. Long story short this was the beginning of the slide into the world of wood turning. Bought a lathe and some tools from an older gent and was hooked. Now 10+ years later I still enjoy turning tops. This bunch went to my local library to support a children's summer reading program. Prizes are given when a book is finished. This was my 5th year supporting. I also sell these but get more enjoyment giving them away.

Start to finish I can make one in 20 minutes. I start with a 2x2x7 hard Maple and get 3 tops. I turn the top first, sand, apply chatter work and color before turning the stem and parting off. Last is a 2 step buffing process. White diamond then carnauba.

They are lovely:thumbs:I too love turning tops, the joy such a simple toy brings, even to adults reminiscing, is a soght that make me smile. I haven't done any as colourful as your, but I will be doing now. Thank you for showing them, it's alway nice to see great work. Have you done any cup and balls?

The first thing I ever turned on my lathe was a top. It worked ok, he second was rubbish, third and fourth were pretty good though! :-)

Really need to make some out of something harder than pine though!

Looks like you have loads of fun doing those tops and for a good cause. Have seen them turned at plenty of shows but still have never made one yet

Terry those tops exceed the best I have ever seen they are over the top IMHO with real quality all the way indeed it made my day to dwell in the pics for a while I also understand you using hard Maple the most suitable choice for this purpose. Most professional mate.

Kind regards Peter.:bravo:
