My wife is a flower arranger and has been looking at some Ikebana designs. Those used a ceramic bowl filled with water and a submerged pin holder for the flowers. I was wondering if it was possible to make a wooden equivalent, not the pin holder. Part of the bowl would obvisously be under water for several days with the top exposed to the air. I had thought of epoxy but that may be too brittle not to crack if the bowl "moves" in its humid enviroment.

I have heard that hard wax finishes like Teatex can be used for wooden goblets and cups but I was wondering if I am expecting too much of this or any other finish.

Has anyone tried this before with any success or has any recomendations

Treated hard wax oil does the trick. Mark Raby used to demo a vase part filled with water using the Treatex treatment. It's usually advertised in Woodturning. It is also alcohol & stain resistant.

A Glass insert could help but continual handling of water with timber needs marine specs as in boat building combined with stainless steel IMHO.

Thanks. I will look at Treatex but it I have also been told that propper yatch varnish would be very suitable. After all if it will seal a wooden boat from sea water it should be fine for what I want.

Not having to bother with water proofing a turned item can't say with any authority but have heard of the two suggestions Rustin's plasti coat and the treatex
