This is a kit I hadn't seen before but thought it was worth a go. The cap clicks on and off instead of screwing but then leaves the end of the brass tube showing. I'm not sure if I like it or not, I've got a few more to make and then I'll make up my mind.

Maybe a closed end would suit the kit better Paul, but it still looks ok'ish to me with the standard Paulm top finish ..

That is an old kit Paul I think Axminster and stiles & bates were among the last to sell them many old turners dont like the way the cap-end wood isn't protected by metal personally I like the old kits anyway well done mate nice pen

The body of this kit is out of proportion, it is far to long, I have loads of these kits. You can paint or magic marker the inside of the cap tube so that it is black and is not so noticeable, how they used to sell this kit I don't know.

The pen is nicely turned and finished though.

Thanks All, I've just had a look and the pen could be 1/2" shorter so might chop the next one down and see what its like. Thanks for the tip on using the marker Peter, that will help too.

Paul I follow your reasoning the dip to the join in the cap area becomes too pronounced as well as the extended length, where theres a will there will be a way (as well as a family).

Kind regards Peter.

I wonder if I should send mine out to members so they can have a bit of fun and see what crap the old kits were like, to be honest I don't think they are worth the postage. :thinks:I think I see a competition on the horizon:thinks:

The main problem I have with these is that the raw end of the tube scrapes the crappy black paint off the nib/writing tip unit after taking the cap off and putting it back on half a dozen times . They really are sh##e. You have done well to make anything presentable out of it.
