Had bought some of the fancy woods from the US as I get to go there occasionally and mainly because I knew nothing about wood in the UK thinking it was pretty bland

So I spend a little time and talk to some foresters and this is the result ! Burr Elm right on my doorstep it's about a foot from corner to edge

It's had a coat of BLO to show the colour as that is my weapon of choice for CA finish but no photo enhancement

Appreciate any advice on how to cut - turn - treat - finish etc :thinks:

I plan to use the back edge for some worthless wood blanks so that's another project to work on

Thats a beautiful burr there Andy. The best thing to do with this is to send it to me!

Alternatively

I would use it for pen blanks because making bowls with it would make me cry with the waste. To fill in the holes use the shavings / dust you create whilst turning and then sand it with some wet ca to fill in the small holes. This creates a slurry that uses the sawdust from the sandpaper and fills the holes. Keep repeating this until the hole is completely black.

Nice one Andy personally I would turn it over and make a natural edge bowl and flog it for about £200 but that's me you will probably want some beautiful pen blanks from it and boy are there some of them in there but at that size you could get both

Blimey :thinks:~ maybe I should be looking at an early retirement plan. I'm going to need a bigger boat as they say to do that as I'm still using my £80 quid s/ h Axminster and I could see us all spinning off down the road !

Will be going for Paul's ( second option! ) of turning it all into pens so hope to post something soon

Very nice indeed Andy
You're going to get lots of differing ideas of what to do with it :rolling:
I would suggest holding on to it for a while and then decide

Drill a hole and set a clock in it, polish it up and sit it on the mantelpiece.
Sit back and admire its beauty wondering what it what look like as pens or a bowl?

That is a thought ! :thinks: Can't see it happening though - alright for you retired gentle folk with plenty of spare time, but I need a pen for when I'm at work :funny: Mind you if I made a bowl as well I could ask for tips? :thinks:

You don't need a bowl for tips.

Tip number 1 send it to a worthy forum member.
Tip 2 ME

:funny::funny::funny:

There are so many things which it can be used for leave it whole until you are happy with what you want to make and then cut it. If you cut it straight away into pen blanks you may wish you had not

I was thinking of sending you one as I really like that White Mallee ! Hang on I thought we had just got to 700?

My bandsaw skills are still at L Plates level so I may just use it as a door stop......

Who told you retirees had plenty of time on their hands? I don't know how I had times to go to work. Not enough hours in the day.
Whatever you turn enjoy it. Beautiful burr.

I would hold onto it and think about it then probably cut it into pen blanks and for sure do some hybrid blanks, a bowl would be so wasteful, but would be decadent.
